Flooding

The Most Common Natural Disaster
Flooding is the most common natural disaster and the leading cause of disaster-related deaths in America. Homes and businesses adjacent to rivers and lakes are prone to floods. Recent floods in Lucas County resulted when heavy rainfall exceeded the ability of the ground or man-made drainage systems to soak up or carry the water away quickly enough.

Be Flood Smart
Home owners and business can become Flood Smart. Many properties can be made flood resistant and protected through Flood Insurance.

Are You in a Flood Zone?
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has developed Floodplain maps of communities that identify areas that are prone to flooding. Those areas are known as Flood Zones. Your local Floodplain Manager can help you to know what to do if you are in a Flood Zone or plan to build near a waterway.  To access FEMA's Floodplain maps, you can visit FEMA's Flood Map Service Center.

Turn Around, Don't Drown!

When flooding occurs do not attempt to walk or drive through moving water. As little as six inches of moving water can sweep you off your feet and vehicles can be swept off roadways by just two feet of moving water. Remember to "Turn Around, Don’t Drown!"
