Gary Byers served as judge of the Maumee Municipal Court from January of 1994 to December of 2017. Mr. Byers is a 1978 cum laude graduate of Hiram College with a bachelor’s degree in political science and music history and theory. He graduated from the University Of Toledo College Of Law in 1981 and was admitted to the practice of law in November of that year.


During his tenure on the Maumee Court, Judge Byers served as chairperson of the Supreme Court Commission on Court Technology and co-chair of the Standards Subcommittee which was established by the Supreme Court to develop technology standards for case management systems, electronic filing of cases, web site development, electronic signatures, and other issues relating to courts across Ohio. He also taught technology and other court related issues to judges on behalf of the Ohio Judicial College.


Before being elected, Byers served as Deputy Attorney General under Lee Fisher and headed the Toledo Regional Office. His prior service included being Director of Elections from 1989 to 1992 as well as serving seven years as a felony prosecutor under Anthony Pizza trying serious felony cases.


Gary Byers has been a board member of Sunshine Communities for more than 29 years and currently serves on the board of Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He is a member of the Maumee Kiwanis Club and has served 3 terms as president. Mr. Byers volunteers on Fridays to sing with first and third graders at Fairfield Elementary school and instituted a helmet safety program for district graduates of Safety City. He also made regular presentations to citizen police academies.


During his tenure as judge, Mr. Byers helped develop an internet based video arraignment system, installed a digital video recording system, and established a domestic violence task force for the Maumee Court Jurisdiction. He has also instituted real time access to court records on the internet and has established email reminders to attorneys appearing ins court.


Mr. Byers was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in November of 2018 and began his first term in January of 2019.
