Civil Section

The Sheriff is required by statute to execute every summons, order, or other process directed to him by a proper and lawful authority of this state and make return of process. The Sheriff shall also execute process issued by another state but only if it contains either a certification by the judge of the court that issued the process that the document conforms to the laws of the state where the document was issued or, if the process is an initial summons to appear and defend after filing a complaint, a similar certification by the clerk of the court issuing the process.

The Sheriff is also responsible for executing on a writ from the court in which a plaintiff has received judgment against a defendant where he must appraise, advertise and sell real property. Once the sale has been confirmed by the court, the Sheriff must record a deed in the name of the purchaser.
