The primary mission of the Forensic Toxicology Laboratory at the Lucas County Coroner’s Office is post-mortem analysis which determines the absence or presence of drugs and their metabolites or other toxic substances in human fluids and tissues and evaluates their role as a determinant or contributory factor in the cause and manner of death. In addition, Human performance toxicology is concerned with the relationship between the presence of a drug in an individual and changes in behavior or performance on assigned tasks. Forensic toxicology is a science in which – like other sciences – providing quality is more than developing or adopting procedures and analytical methods that merely need to be performed according to international standards and guidelines or technical requirements of objective testing. Furthermore, in order to maintain excellence in analytical assaying; techniques and performance are to be reviewed annually by the toxicologist and his/her designee to ensure performance standards are being met.
